En 2011, Niland finalmente logró entrar al cuadro principal de Wimbledon. Y no solo eso, estaba 4-1 arriba en el quinto set ante francés Adrian Mannarino.
El premio por ganar ese partido era enfrentar a Federer en el mismísimo Centre Court. Pero el francés dio vuelta el marcador y le robó ese sueño.
“Pienso en ese partido todos los días”, confesó Niland a The Sun. “Era imposible ignorar que estábamos jugando por un lugar en la cancha central contra Roger Federer”, se lamentó.
“Obviamente, creo que eso me afectó y no pude cerrar el partido (…) Jugar contra Federer en Wimbledon realmente habría captado la atención de la gente”, agregó.

Tras una lesión crónica en la cadera, decidió colgar la raqueta. Se metió a estudiar y hoy es director asociado en una de las firmas inmobiliarias más grandes del mundo, Cushman & Wakefield.
Su día a día ya no pasa por raquetas ni canchas, sino por contratos, arriendos y ventas.
Eso sí, su amor por el tenis no murió. Sigue vinculado a la Copa Davis irlandesa y escribió una autobiografía premiada, The Racket, donde cuenta la otra cara del circuito.
